Despite being the most populous country in the world, India is bursting forth with ideas, diversity, and development. However, in following the practice of organ donation, the rate in India is below 1 per million population (pmp), while a country as small and sparsely populated as Spain stands at almost 50 pmp, and the US stands at 36 pmp.
Here, this is to be noted that more than 200,000 Indians require organ transplant every year. These demand-supply gap increases the chances of illegal activities in the field of organ donation. To regularize and monitor transplantation of human organs and tissues, the Government of India came up with Transplantation of Human Organ and Tissue Act (THOTA).
